Changes in 1.6.7

Improved
  • Editor window is now resizable.
  • Group titles can now be longer than 30 characters.
  • The program now looks better when large system fonts are used.
  • The "D>" keyword of deleted files now color-coded in built-in log file viewer.

Changes in 1.6.6

Fixed
  • Sometimes files were updated even they were not changed in source folder (mostly when copying to CD/DVD-RW disk using packet-writing software).
  • When trying to copy NTFS encrypted files to non-NTFS partition, "The specified file could not be encrypted" error message was displayed and the files were not copied.
  • Tools | Replace function is now case-insensitive.
  • "Copy only to the disk labeled" option now works with removable hard drives.

Changes in 1.6.5

New
  • /MINIMIZE command line switch is now supported in the console module too.
Fixed
  • When any of files copied was larger than 2GB, total size of copied files displayed in the GUI was invalid.
  • Occassional Access Violation error in the console module. That happened after all files were copied and trying to update log file that was on a read-only disk.

Changes in 1.6.4

Fixed
  • %H% destination folder variable did not work.

Changes in 1.6.3

Fixed
  • "Copy only to the disk labeled" option did not work properly with CD/DVD drives.

Changes in 1.6.2

New
  • Built-in log file viewer now contains basic search function.
  • Added RemoveArchiveAttribFromSource expert setting. When this is set, the program will always clear archive attributes of source files. See "Expert Settings" topic in user's manual.
  • Now warning message is displayed when mirror mode is specified and target folder is drive root. If this setup is used wrong, it is possible to erase entire target drive.
Fixed
  • Read-only files and folders in target that were removed from source gave access denied errors and were not deleted.
  • The program did not copy folders that started with a period "."

Changes in 1.6.1

New
  • Option to update destination file time. Useful to fix problem with some packet-writing drivers that change file last modification time to current time when copying to CD/DVD-RW.
  • added %WM% and %WY% destination folder variables, they insert "the week of the month" and "the week of the year" numbers accordingly.
Improvements
  • Now includes built-in workaround to "unchanged files always copied" problem that happened when source and destination file systems were different. The problem caused Backup Magic to copy many/all files every time, not only files that were changed since last backup. IF YOU USED ARCHIVE ATTRIBUTE OPTION ONLY TO WORK AROUND THIS PROBLEM, DON'T FORGET TO DISABLE IT NOW.
Fixed
  • If trying to File | Reopen a file that does not exist any more, now will display message. Previously did nothing.

Changes in 1.6.0

New
  • "Place Shortcut on Desktop" command in File menu. That allows you to place shortcut to open backup set file on the Desktop easily.
  • Added %DESKTOP% source folder variable.
  • Added button to load default settings on Settings tab.
  • Will now show a warning prompt when archive bit option is activated. This can be disabled.
Improvements
  • Updated online help and now includes also printable User's Manual in PDF format.
  • Validate command will now resolve any folder variables first, then will validate the results. Also, it will only validate groups that are not disabled.
  • Several smaller fixes and changes, mostly cosmetic.

Changes in 1.5.3

Fixed
  • Problem where toolbar buttons occassionally did not respond to mouse clicks on Win9x/Me.

Changes in 1.5.2

Fixed
  • When incremental mode used, OLD backup files were not updated
Improvements
  • Console module will now display backup set name on title bar

Changes in 1.5.1

Additions
  • Open toolbar button has now drop-down menu that lists recently used files.
  • Executables digitally signed.
Improvements
  • Now better Windows XP themes support.

Changes in 1.5.0

Additions
  • Windows XP themes support
  • Built-in log viewer now supports files bigger than 32k even on Win 9x systems.
  • Now it is possible to run external programs before and after backup.
  • Option to use archive bit to detect changed files (incremental mode only). When using default timestamp mode, Backup Magic may be unable to detect if file is changed if NTFS filesystems are used and source & destination folders are in different computers. Looks file time resolution on different computers are different and this can't be reliably used to detect if a file is changed, so BM always copies all files, not only updated files. If you set this option then first backup will be full backup since archive attribute is usually set on all your files.

Changes in 1.4.0

Additions
  • Option to include filenames in log file. If you use bult-in log viewer, you'll see color coding that helps you more easily read log file.
  • New variable %USERNAME% can be used in target folder template. That way you can create one backup set file on server, and many users can run it to copy their files to server. Don't need to create backup set file for each user any more. If you specify X:\Backup\%USERNAME% then Backup folder on server will contain files from all users, under personal subfolders.
  • New source folder variable %MYDOCUMENTS% that is replaced with full path of user My Documents folder. Useful in network environment when one backup set can be used by different clients (see above about %USERNAME%).
  • New popup menu helps you to insert variables into source and target folder templates.
  • Most recently edited backup set files are now easily accessible under File -> Reopen.
  • Check for Update commend under Help menu.
  • Program now comes also with printable help file in RTF format.
Fixes
  • Improved removable drive label check.
  • Display Resolved Destination function now displays different message if no variables were used.
  • Now displays error message if you try to use reserved ":" symbol in destination folder variable.
  • Display Resolved Destination command displayed Access Violation message if source folder template was empty.
  • Changed registration system to solve problem with Windows NT/2000/XP, where users without administrator privileges were able to run the program only in evaluation mode. Due to this you need to enter your registration code to the program again, because it will start up in evaluation mode, even if you had full verison previously installed.

Changes in 1.3.2

Additions
  • Now logs error if source path is not found/is inaccessible (optional, see "Inaccessible source folder causes error" checkbox on the Settings tab)
Fixes
  • File count label in backup progress windows is now wider to fit entire string.

Changes in 1.3.1

Fixes
  • Fixed bug in Mirror mode when you had specified your own file/folder masks (not default *) then Backup Magic made mirror like you had both file and folder include masks set to *.

Changes in 1.3.0

Additions
  • Separate, lighweight console mode module, mostly useful for scheduling backups on background on NT server with AT command.
  • Tools menu with some commands to run backup set using console module etc.
  • -SILENT command line switch for GUI, doesn't prompt to see error log if errors found during backup, can be used together with -CLOSE.
Changes
  • Changed some registration routines. You now are able to use the software under any user account even if you have not installed it under this account. If you install it under admin account on NT, any user can use the software. Unfortunately you need to enter your registration information again since the program will start in trial mode. If you have lost your registration code, please tell us and I'll e-mail you new code.

Changes in 1.2.1

Fixes
  • Bug that caused Access Violation error if the source was drive root. This problem appeared in previous update.

Changes in 1.2.0

Additions
  • Date & time of last successful backup is visible now in the Log tab of the editor.
  • %SOURCEPATH% variable, see more from online help.
Fixes
  • Sometimes backup was terminated after copying first file. Log file showed "used terminated" but actually user didn't terminate.
  • If the source folder ended with backslash and %SOURCEDIR% variable was used in destination folder name, the %SOURCEDIR% was removed but no folser name was placed instead.

Changes in 1.1.1

Fixes
  • Fixed some serious problems with the new Mirror backup type. If you have version 1.1.0, please upgrade to this release.

Changes in 1.1.0

Additions
  • Now there are 2 backup modes: Incremental and Mirror mode. Incremental is the same as old version used, but Mirror makes exact copy of the folder's content (based on your filters). That means if you have deleted files from your source folder, they will be deleted from your backup drives as well. You cannot use "Keep old changed files" option with the Mirror mode.
  • Last browsed folders for WAV files and BMS files will be used as defaults on next run.
Changes
  • Now "Keep old changed files" setting is group-based. You can have groups that have this setting active and other groups that don't. Be sure to check all your settings if opening backup set files saved with earlier versions of Backup Magic.
Fixes
  • Toolbar button images were not visible or program crashed if Internet Explorer 5 was installed AND display bit depth was set to 16-bit (or bigger). That was caused by updated ComCtl32.dll system file that IE5 installs.
  • On some cases when errors were found during backup, the program displayed "New files" with negative values in reports.
  • Price fixed to $20 ;-)
